EES – the new Entry/Exit System at Schengen borders

The digital entry/exit registration will start 12 Oct 2025 and be gradually implemented at Schengen borders.

What is EES?

EES is an IT system that replaces passport stamps. It electronically records when third-country nationals entering for short stays (up to 90 days within 180 days) enter or leave the Schengen Area. The goal is to modernize border controls, increase security, and enforce stay regulations more efficiently.

Who is affected?

All third-country nationals entering the EU for short stays, whether visa-required or visa-free, including those with a valid Malaysian passport.

Data collected

  • Personal information: name, date of birth, nationality
  • Travel document: type, number, validity
  • Biometric data: facial photo and fingerprints (from age 12)
  • Travel information: date, location, and authority of entry or exit
  • Possible entry refusals

Not affected:

  • EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens
  • Holders of valid long-stay visas or residence permits
  • Diplomats, heads of state, and other privileged groups
