Authentication of Signature

Article

Introduction

Signature certification serves to confirm that a specific individual has personally signed a document. It is required when the authenticity of a signature must be proven for use in Germany. The certification is carried out by a consular officer at the competent German mission abroad.

Types of Signature Certification

Signature certification confirms the authenticity of a signature without examining the content of the document. It is sufficient for the following purposes:

  • Declarations of approval (e.g. subsequent consent to a previously signed contract)
  • Simple powers of attorney (e.g. for a single legal transaction)
  • Entries in the German commercial register
  • Applications for a certificate of conduct (police clearance certificate)
  • Declarations of inheritance renunciation

Certain legal matters, such as general powers of attorney, property transactions or acknowledgements of paternity, require notarisation instead of certification. Please clarify in advance with the competent authority in Germany whether a signature certification is sufficient.

Required Documents

Please bring the following documents to your appointment:

  • The document to be signed (unsigned)
  • A valid passport or national ID card
  • If applicable: a copy of the contract in case of declarations of approval
  • If applicable: proof of legal representation or authorisation
  • If required: proof of residence within the consular district of the mission

Appointment Requirement

A personal appointment is always required for signature certification. Please schedule your appointment via the online booking system of the competent German mission:

Fees

The standard fee for signature certification is 56.43 euros. In specific cases (e.g. name declarations), fees may differ. Payment must be made in the local currency at the applicable exchange rate. Accepted payment methods are listed on the mission’s website.

Important Note

Signature certification in connection with banking matters (e.g. account opening) is generally not possible.
